“Island Souls: a Portrait of the Big Island” is a unique portraiture exhibit showing through July 28 at Wailoa Art Center in Hilo.

Photographer/artist Michael Philip Manheim used multiple exposures to create unique portraits that beyond the subjects’ surface.

“I ask my subjects to release their feelings as if alone in the room,” he explains. “Each has an individual style. But each taps into universal expression, moving hands and body and head. Facial expressions facilitate the telegraphing of thoughts.

“I react with multiple exposures in the camera, layering these multi-faceted aspects of personality onto a single frame. Somehow my multiple exposures capture more than the literal, revealing what I think are the spaces in between.

“… In the end, each photograph comes from pure intuition, wrapped around the human experience, and left as a surprise in my camera.”

Manheim is seeking volunteers to expand the number of “island soul” portraits. He’s accepts walk- ins every Wednesday and Saturday this month from 1 to 5 p.m. at Patricia’s Transitions, 277 Keawe St. Appointments can also be scheduled vie email at michaelpm50@gmail.com
